Some people have to either reduce their salt intake or do without it completely. More often than not, this is upsetting because of the idea that salt is the easiest way to make food taste better.
But don’t fret! There are other ways to make food more flavorful.
If you are accustomed to high sodium meals, your palette will need to adjust. Cut back on the salt slowly. This will allow you to appreciate the flavor of the individual ingredients better than to immediately cut salt out of your diet.
There are many alternatives to salt. You can choose to use herbs and spices to enhance and compliment the ingredients in most dishes. It will work to your advantage to know what herbs and spices work well together, and which of them will work well with the ingredients as a whole. Take note, too, if the dish you are preparing is of local or foreign origin. Asian dishes typically use sweet basil, chilli powder, and perhaps some curry or cloves. Mediterranean dishes will have a lot of herbs like basil, oregano, and thyme.
Freshen It Up
While bottled, boxed, and canned items have their place, some dietary restrictions call for the removal of such items from your pantry. Making your own tomato sauce from scratch, for example, will always seem like it’s tastier not only for the effort you put into making it, but also because you were able to prepare it according to your personal preferences.
Reduced stocks, made from scratch or otherwise, also known as bases, can be found in granulated or liquid forms. Depending on where you get it, many come in low to no sodium variations. Chicken and beef bases are typically the most used in many kitchens and can replace salt in enriching dishes if the above options are still too light in flavor for your liking.
Consider the number of options at your fingertips. Anything from changing the type of oil you use to changing the way you cook can help enhance the taste of your food. You just need to find what works for you.
